If you choose to blog than to make your own custom domain then ..go nomore furher.You can make a free blog in blogger.com .I recomend this site because in this topic i am using it and it is a product of google and it is accepted by most of all advertising sites.Most probably google adsense or adhitz or traffic junkie.You can  make an account by using your previous hotmail or google account.So sign up for an account and if you are a basic user then you get to choose from 10-15 templates and if you are professional then you can also import your xml files to this site.Next part is to choose a specific topic and a unique and catchy url name for your blog .So dont just hurry into it but you can also change the url name if you want.If the url name chosen by you is not occupied by other then you can start blogging.SO dont just think that i made a blog and just rush to signup for adsense .They might sometimes not accept your application if the url you gave to them is not a bit popular one.I dont mean that you need a awful lot of traffic but what i am trying to say is that you can take a bit of time ..sign up for webmaster which is also a part of google and the webmaster tool makes your websites more likely to show on search queries..so this might be a very good chance for you to drive traffic to your site.You can even socialize your blog by sharing it with your friends online and even in your status.And what i want to tell you is that traffic is the most important thing so at first focus at the blog more than on money.So what i recon i that you first start blogging .Write on the topic you have chosen.And i tell you the google likes mostly the sites which have a lot of quantity of pages and a lot of articles about the certain subject that you have choosen.At first what i recon is that you make different pages for the different topics that come under the topic what you have chosen.And you also make a sitemap of your site.WHICH probably means that you create a new page that links to other pages on your blog and also give a short description about each and after you are done making the sitemap submit it to the webmaster..and this helps a lot to drive traffic on to your blog.AND AFTER A 1 WEEK OR SO YOU CAN SIGN UP FOR ADSENSE
